The purpose of fundraising (thank you for your support!)

Without valuable resources, we’d be unable to fulfil our mission so ensuring the financial sustainability of our programs is critical for our organization. At Two Wheel View, we have focused on diversifying our funding streams over the last few years to ensure that we are able to continue working with young people and helping them develop the skills and knowledge to act as resilient, growing citizens of our communities. However, fundraising isn’t just about financial resources; there are many important outcomes that come from our fundraising activities that have nothing to do with money.

Non-financial outcomes of fundraising activities

Fundraising activities are great ways for organizations like Two Wheel View to raise much-needed financial support for our mission. However, they are also so much more! The non-financial outcomes of our events are quite possibly the most important, and usually, the most sustainable. Fundraising is also a way for us to promote our message and goals, to make friends and build partnerships, and develop community relationships.

Informing and educating

Our fundraising activities are also opportunities for us to inform and educate our community about the work we are doing and the part they can play in it. At a simple level this means sharing stories about the impact we’ve had on young people. Our wider hope is to communicate the knowledge we have about youth development, and convey the importance that everyone help young people build up the assets that improve their future odds.

Making friends

While fundraising gives us the resources to do to the things we do, we have always felt that ‘friendraising’ is much more important. Our friends have signed up for our newsletters, attended our events, joined our volunteer team and helped us promote our work on social media in ways that have had a big impact on our organization. And some of our friends have been very generous too – we received a Fat Bike donation this year, which we were able to sell back to the community for $900 that is going towards our youth development programs.

Building partnerships

Our recent Winter Cycling event, which was a smaller fundraiser in terms of financial outcomes, was huge for building partnerships. This year we welcome Reworks YYC as a new third-party fundraiser, who is helping us spread the message of sustainability, local focus and making an impact.

Supporting community relationships

Our Annual ‘Adventurer Lecture Series’ brings local outdoor enthusiasts, youth development supporters and non-profit allies together under one roof for an evening of story-telling by some incredible people who have achieved astonishing things. We are proud to be a catalyst that unites these different communities and helps forge new relationships that grow beyond a single evening. Thank you to our past adventurers for joining us; we look forward to more stories in 2019!

Sources of funding at TWV

Two Wheel View has increasingly sought to diversify the sources of our funding, which helps make us a more sustainable and stable organization. Having different sources of funding also means we have more flexibility on how we can use our financial resources, which means we can invest in the parts of our organization that need it most, at any given time.

Social Enterprise

In September 2017 we officially became licensed to operate the social enterprise element of TWV. This gave us the ability to repair and resell donated bikes in support of our programs. Thank you to the wonderful members of our community who came into our shop and purchased your very own ‘two wheel view’ – there was almost 250 of you in 2018!

In-kind Donations

This year we received a number of in-kind donations that helped us deliver our programs. Among others, we’d like to thank Clif Bar, SunRype, BikeBike Inc., Lifesport and Microsoft 365 Enterprise for their support this year!

Government Grants

We are forever grateful for the support we receive from the various levels of government and government-organizations. The work we do wouldn’t be possible without the support of entities like the Government of Canada, Alberta Human Services, Alberta Culture and Tourism and Family and Community Support Services.

We receive a lot of support throughout the year from various Foundations. In 2018, we are especially grateful for the support from the Burns Memorial Fund, Jumpstart, the Calgary Foundation and many of our city’s Rotary Clubs.

Corporate Support

This year we were the lucky recipients of corporate support from businesses like Century Downs Racetrack and Casino, the Roy McAvoy Golf Tournament, Norton Rose Fulbright, Ridley’s Cycle, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Big Fish Staffing and Core Inc. Thank you for your kindness and generosity this year. We look forward to working together in 2019!

Individual Donations

Last, but certainly not least, is our incredible list of individual donors. These generous supporters, both named and anonymous, kindly gift us with donations throughout the year. There are too many to mention by name, and many more who wouldn’t want the recognition anyway, but to each and every one of them, we send our deepest gratitude for the way you’ve helped us throughout the years. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Holiday giving

For many, there is no more meaningful time to give than during the holidays. Two Wheel View is always appreciative of the gifts we receive at any time of the year, but as 2018 comes to a close, we are even more grateful for the donations we receive that help put us in a strong position to kick off 2019 by providing more and better programs to deserving kids.
