Kind Words for Bike Club from Our Lady of the Evergreens School

Dear Friends,

We were very excited to host Two Wheel View’s Earn-a-Bike Program at Our Lady of Evergreens School last fall. Students were caught up in the anticipation from week to week and found the two hour sessions flew by. The structure of the sessions offered a good balance among community building, leadership, safety and bicycle mechanics. Our students still appreciate the patient and friendly staff who “really helped us to understand what to do” (from Katrina). On the lighter side, weekly snacks and the community of new friends developed among our students over the course of the eight weeks. It was rewarding this spring to see how proud students were to ride their “new” bikes to school.

Students fondly remember the program as fun, a great time to make new friends and they appreciated learning how to fix a bike, including the acronym ABC (air, brakes and chain). A few considered the program a pivotal experience in their lives.

A sure-fire vote of confidence for the program came from Lucas, “It was a great experience. It helped me a lot. Once I broke my bike and I didn’t know how to fix it, but now I know. If I could, I would it again but more advanced.”

Diego shared Lucas’ enthusiasm, describing the program as “awesome”. “I really thought this was an awesome experience to spend time with the people who participated and the young adults who taught us some really good skills to using a bike. Also they taught us how to sometimes repair a bike and build it in some cases. We all go to know each other a lot more and I just think this program was really good and that it should be given to future generations.”

Another participant, Light, said the program changed his life entirely: “I got to learn about a lot of things like how to fix wheels, fix brakes and get dirty (which was the most fun). It added on to my knowledge and help me make friends that stayed with me through the year. But most of all it made me a better person.”

Victoria endorsed all aspects of the program: “Having the experience to be in Two Wheel View was great; learning to fix a bike is great knowledge to know. At the beginning of every class we had opening circle where you introduce your name and something about you. After that we had a snack and played a game to get our energy up. It was awesome because at the end you get a free used bike, helmet, lock and a pizza party. I had a lot of fun.”

We look forward to hosting the Earn-a-Bike Program in the future.
