#Spokes-person Profile: Rusveer Jones


I've been on the adventure of a lifetime with my husband and best friend for the past 15 years. We have a 4-year old daughter who is the best of both of us, and it’s a joy to watch her grow up. My hobbies include baking, biking, and (very) recently Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If I could be anywhere in the world, it would be at the end of the Hermosa Beach Pier. I love comedy flicks, long walks on the beach, and Mexican food. If I could see one major change in the world in my lifetime, it would be to see the end of homelessness.

What’s your best riding tip? If anything feels awkward or uncomfortable, stop! Even if you are new to riding, the bike can be adjusted and while your muscles might be getting used to the workout, nothing should hurt. Take a minute to check everything (or ask someone for help) and make sure that when you are riding, it feels easy. I put up with knee and shoulder pain for days on rides, only to find out a simple seat adjustment would have fixed it.

What is a piece of wisdom you want to pass on to younger riders, or young people who want to ride? There are only two types of people who ride bikes. Those who have crashed/fallen, and those who haven’t…yet. You WILL fall, but please don’t ever let that keep you from getting back up – from your bike, or in life.

What brought you into the biking community? I had a pretty bad accident when I was a kid, and my bike was stolen days later. I never got back on another bike and avoided them for over 25 years. When my 4 year old daughter started riding, I told myself I had plenty of time to learn again, since she was on training wheels and taking her for a bike ride just meant I could walk alongside her. During the pandemic lockdown, she grew past the training wheels! I realized that I would miss so much time with her – so many of her adventures, fitness, and happiness – if I didn’t get on a bike and ride with her. Now I look back on all the years I lived in Southern California and missed out on bike rides by the ocean and I wish I had conquered my fears sooner!

What is your most memorable biking trip/story? When I first got back on my bike this spring, I wanted to stay in parking lots – away from people and cars! I wanted to practice everything and was terrified of getting hurt again. One day, my husband asked the Calgary bike community on Twitter for some ideas for easy bike trails in Canmore. We did a 4.5km trail ride along the Bow River, stopping frequently for breaks and enjoying a part of Alberta we had never seen before, and one we probably would not have seen if not for being on our bikes. Up ahead, I could see that we were going to ride between the river and a dirt path with trees and I was terrified of crashing. Before I knew it, we were back at our starting point and I couldn’t believe I did it. It’s been a long time since I felt like I really challenged myself to push past my comfort zone, but I did it, and I’m so proud of myself!
