Why do you ride? J: Because it is fun. It might be hard and sweaty but when you get to the top or make a hill you feel so proud of yourself. M: Because it makes me feel strong and fit. I love the freedom I feel when I’m on my bike. I love that feeling of flying but being in total control. I love how every time I go out it is a different ride. Most of all, I love that I can share my favorite sport with my two girls. We have the best time (mostly) when we are all out to

#Spokes-person Profile- Jessy Rajan
Jessy Rajan Waste Geek. Environmental feminist living in Alberta. Exploring Calgary by bike. Biking gives me a strong sense of liberation - liberation from the car, from traffic, from the anguish of sitting in a hot car wondering why the Patullo bridge is always backed up! Giving up my car commute to a bike commute has made me a much happier person. I struggle to engage others in my community (South Asian immigrants) because of the idea that is sold about the car-centric Cana

#Spokes-person Profile- Adrienne Tollas
Why do you ride? Bicycling is my all-in-one vehicle: I use my bike to get from A to B, to exercise, to help stabilize my mental health, and to boost my creativity. When I have the dreaded 'art block' I go for a bike ride and somehow ideas start flowing again. It's also a great way to positively connect with all of Calgary's ever-changing seasons. What brought you into the biking community? I was fortunate enough to grow up in a very pro-bike family. My stepfather was a bike m

Biking makes me feel: Connected to the places I ride and the people I am with. I feel empowered using my own legs to get me where I want to be, I enjoy knowing that biking is something I can always do to feel at ease and have a TON of fun. Biking has given me: A continual sense of freedom, fu

#Spokes-person profile- Lindsay Bliek
My name is Lindsay Bliek and I love to ride my bike, always have. I still remember the day I learned to ride: my mom said she’d hold on and when I turned around at the end of the only flat stretch in our neighbourhood, she wasn’t there! I used to just ride for fun, but more often than not I now ride for function, and find it way more enjoyable than driving so it is an easy choice for me to hop on my bike, even with my two kids as cargo. Biking has given me a sense of independ

Hi I'm Kayla Bonham, an avid bicycling woman, putting the trans in transportation for more than 50 years! I'm a mostly self-taught rider and mechanic, at least until joining EVCC, COC, Spin Sisters bike clubs and upgrading my skills to the next level! After learning how to REALLY do mountain biking, I tried racing and then had fun assistant-coaching with Dirt Series. I co-developed a 'Learn-to-Race' program with Spin Sisters to de-mystify and reassure novice bike racers to gi

#Spokes-person Profile- Sarah Hornby
My name is Sarah. I've ridden casually for several years but more recently, I've fallen in love with bikepacking. I spent much of my spare time last year exploring a multitude of routes throughout the Canadian Rockies of Alberta and BC. I also enjoy gravel riding and mountain biking, which constantly challenges and pushes my limits. Why do you ride?
I ride for adventure. Fun! Freedom. Independence. To feel empowered. To challenge myself. For a sense of accomplishment. To be

#Spokes-person profile- Molli Bennett
My name is Molli and I am primarily a commuter cyclist and bike mechanic but I a dabble in multiple types of recreational cycling. I am passionate about sharing my love for bicycles with young people, especially those who don't see themselves represented in the mainstream portrayal of cyclists. What’s your best riding tip? Bicycling is inherently social. You will spend lots of time over many kilometres pedalling alone -- sometimes in tough conditions. As often as you can, say yes to shared bicycling experiences and play an active part in forming community. What is a piece of wisdom you want to pass on to younger riders, or young people who want to ride? I have learned is that people develop a growth mentality on their bicycles. We all set goals for ourselves, and as
